Histroy of L202

RSS Excellence was the first to be towed to Singapore on the 10th August 1976. After which, she went to SSE for re-activation refit. The refit was completed on 10 May 1977, and she returned to Brani Naval Base on her own power. The first time RSS Excellence went out to sea was on 10 June 1977. She was tasked for a sea cruise for the Commandos. The first overseas task for RSS Excellence was a trip to Brunei, which was schedule from 14 August 1977 to 27 August 1977. On 16 October 1977, RSS Excellence was opened to visitors for the first time.

RSS Excellence was schedule for refit from 28 November 1977 to 12 December 1977 in SSE to prepare her for a major overseas trip (Ex. CPX). RSS Excellence sailed for CPX trip from 05 January 1978 to 13 May 1978 with RSS Endurance in company. On the first day of departure from Singapore, both RSS Excellence and RSS Endurance proceeded for the Land Tours' Brigade Command Post Exercise codenamed "Flying Chariot". During the trip, a series of friendly matches such as soccer and volleyball were played by personnel from RSN and the host country. In addition to the games, cocktail parties and functions were also organised during the trip. The port of call during the CPX trip includes Darwin, Brisbane, Auckland, Wellington and Lyttleton. On returning, a heart-warming welcome was arranged for the trip by relatives and friends at Bedok Jetty. After more than two years since she was towed to Singapore, RSS Excellence was 'finally' commissioned by the Minister of State for Denfence Mr Bernard Chen Tien Lap on 28 October 1978. RSS Excellence's illustrious service includes notable contributions like Ops Surya Bhaskara Jaya, a socio-economic activity that took her to various parts of the Indonesian archipelago. She also took part in the INTERFET operations in East Timor.

RSS EXCELLENCE was commissioned on 28 Oct 1978. Throughout her 22 years of service with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), she has played many important roles - as a training platform, support and replenishment ship, command platform, and as an ambassador of Singapore. She has kept the RSN Ensign flying high in places as far away as Japan in the North, New Zealand in the South, Timor in the East and India in the West. Though modestly equipped when compared to today's high technology navy ships, her reliability made her an indispensable asset for the many missions performed by the Republic of Singapore Navy. In recent years, her notable contributions included her vital role in the recovery operations of Ops Menolong in Palembang following the crash of Flight MI 185 and Ops Surya Bhaskara Jaya, a socio-economic activity which took her to various parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Towards the end of her illustrious service, RSS EXCELLENCE made Singapore proud through her important and widely publicised mission in East Timor, where she provided logistics support to the INTERFET operations there. In all her deployments, she demonstrated that the men and women who sailed on her are willing and able to complete with distinction any task given to them, and in the process, contribute to the missions of the Republic of Singapore Navy and the regional security of Singapore. As we witness her decommissioning on 23 Nov 2000, we are both moved by her solemn presence and thankful for the rich heritage she leaves behind. She will forever be remembered for her faithful service in the finest traditions of the Republic of Singapore Navy.
